Fixed orthodontic appliances

Orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances is performed using brackets that are placed on the outer surface of the teeth and connected to each other with a thin metal wire. Brackets can be metal or ceramic, depending on the aesthetic and functional needs of the patient. The goal of treatment is to gradually move the teeth into the correct position, improving both the function of the mouth and the aesthetics of the smile.

Metal and ceramic braces/brackets

Metal braces are made of high-strength stainless steel and are considered the most reliable and popular option. Their main disadvantage is their poor aesthetics, as their metallic color is noticeable, especially on the front teeth. For this reason, they are mainly preferred in adolescents or patients who are not particularly concerned about aesthetics. In contrast, ceramic brackets are made of materials such as alumina or zirconium and mimic the natural color of teeth, offering a much more discreet appearance.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

In terms of pain, orthodontic treatment is not considered painful, but it is possible for the patient to feel mild discomfort or pressure in the first few days after the appliance is fitted or activated. These symptoms are normal, subside quickly, and indicate that the teeth are beginning to move. With proper guidance from the orthodontist and adherence to oral hygiene instructions, treatment can proceed smoothly and with excellent functional and aesthetic results.
